In the spring of 2004, The Drinker, a sculpture by graffiti artist Banksy, was kidnapped. At midday, in front of a live audience of lunching office workers of the media industry, this pseudo replica of Rodins Thinker, crowned with a traffic cone, was lifted from its central London location onto the back of a truck. Three men wearing white overalls, their faces covered with gas masks, strapped him up and gagged him. The event was documented on film. A photo shoot featuring the blindfolded and gagged Drinker ensued. Photographs were taken and distributed to the press together with a ransom note. The negotiations between the artist and Art Kieda, the movement behind the kidnap, unfolded on the pages of the Guardian. Banksy decided not to concede to Art Kieda demands and The Drinker remains, unharmed, in the possession of the movements spokesperson and founding member, known as AK47. Graffiti artist Banksy has struck again, this time erecting a life-size sculpture of a Guantanamo Bay inmate at Disneyland. Families visiting the Los Angeles theme park saw a jarring figure ? dressed in an orange jumpsuit with its hands and feet manacled ? beside the Rocky Mountain Railroad ride. His Disneyland piece was made out of an inflatable doll with a black hood. It poked fun at the controversial detention of hundreds of terror suspects at the American naval base in Cuba. Amnesty International has blasted the prison as a "human rights scandal". The Disneyland sculpture remained in place for one and a half hours before it was spotted. "The segregation wall is a disgrace... The possibility I find exciting is you could turn the world's most invasive and degrading structure into the world's longest gallery of free speech and bad art..." - Banksy In 2004 the international court of justice declared the wall illegal and against international law and that all contruction should be stopped immediatley. The international court ruled -the construction and its associated regime was contrary to international law; -Israel was under obligation to cease construction and dismantle the wall; -Israel should compensate owners of land seized to construct the barrier and those harmed by the barrier; -all states are under obligation not to recognise the situation and ensure Israel's compliance with international law; -the UN should consider what further action to take. In the same year a United Nations general assembly resolution was passed demanding Israel comply with the world court and dismantle and compensate all Palestinians affected by the wall's construction. The resolution was passed with 150 to 6. Israel and the United States being among the states that voted against the resolution. Israel has yet to comply with any demands made by the UN, the world court, the intternational courst of justice or human rights watch.
